I cannot remember how Debussy's song cycle "Ariettes Oubliées" came to my attention. When I found out that he used Paul Verlaine's poems in this cycle I immediately thought I need to use the same text for a work of my own. This will be my second cycle of poems by Paul Verlaine. The first was "Melancholia" for soprano and piano.

However Debussy "cheated" in his "Ariettes Oubliées." He only used three of the nine poems from Paul Verlaine's "Ariettes Oubliées." The remaining three in his cycle came from "Paysages Belges" and "Aquarelles." As a challenge I have decided in my case to use all nine poems from "Ariettes Oubliées."
