This brass quintet arrangement captures the subtle textures of the composers chromatic harmonies inspired in the original vocal octet by a poem by T. B. Aldrich. Born of an African father, Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers. One of Coleridge-Taylor's rare A Cappella compositions for vocal SATB double choir here arranged for brass quintet, Sea Drift is infused with descriptive tone-color painting highlighting the tragic story of the merchant sailor who perishes in a stormy sea to the despair of his lover onshore. The brass quintet is scored for two B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, horn in F with alternate flugelhorn part, trombone with alternate horn part, and tuba. The recording is of the entire edition.
The Music of Black Composers Series is a welcome and timely addition to the brass repertoire. Interesting music, expertly arranged, fun to perform, and well received by audiences.
