The lyrics of the Silent Night were written by a German priest, Joseph Mohr, in 1816. While he was on a pilgramage to a church in Mariapfarr, Austria, he was inspired by the beauty of the snow covered mountains and valleys that he wrote a poem that described the setting and the birth of Christ.
He presented his poem to his musical director, Franz Gruber in 1818, who wrote the melody for the guitar.
An Episcopalian priest, John Freeman Young, translated the lyrics from German to English in 1859.
