If you have seen the MGM Judy Garland Wizard of Oz film, and who has NOT seen it at least once, you will no doubt remember the ominous chord played by the orchestra as the Witch's Guards are walking up the drawbridge, as they chant along. That chord is A min 6/9. It is the basis for the introduction and the coda to this A-A-B-A' form Latin jazz piece, in a tango-esque vein. The elaborate melody is underpinned by short chords in the right hand, and a bassline in the left hand. The B section has solid chords under a single-note melody for contrast. Then it returns to the main theme with a small variation and a coda, the same music as the intro, to finish. The B section modulates to three other remote keys before returning, via E7, to A minor. Duration just over 3 mins. A romantic mood, with a hint of the exotic, and, as the title suggests, some musical hints as to the mysteries of attraction and our fascination with the subtle and tender aspects of Life.
