L'isle Joyeuse (The Isle of Joy) (1903-04) drew its inspiration from a Rococo painting ("Embarkation for Cythera") by Jean-Antoine Watteau. According to legend, Cythera is the birthplace of Venus, the goddess of love. Debussy calls the work "an orchestral reduction for piano"
