Product Description

This deeply grieving music expresses St. Clair's subconscious anguish and loss of psychological entrapment and resulting loss of personal freedom in a demanding Boston musicians cult led by Margaret Chaloff and Avram David. The first movement is reflective and moody; the second movement is brimming with fire and energy; the third and final movement expresses his despair at his then-present entanglement in the cult, and ends with a wailing atonal megachord, a final act of resignation. He was only able to escape the cult in 1989 after 17 years of involvement, and his life has emerged victorious both spiritually and artistically.

This work constitutes part one of the composer's music Ph.D. in lieu of a written thesis, from the Harvard Music Department, where he was awarded his doctorate in 1978. Pictured is the composer in cap and gown at his commencement in Spring of 1978.
