Festa de Percussao is a drumming ensemble piece for 10 percussionists. It is dedicated to the percussion ensembles at Brisbane Grammar School.
In late 2024, I reached out to percussion educators in Australia interested in new percussion pieces.
As a teacher, I found it often difficult to find pieces that suited my ensembles well which is why I wrote new repertoire.
In an attempt to expand repertoire for ensembles in QLD, Australia, I offered ensemble directors the opportunity to commission a piece for their specific ensembles.
Lucas Gordon from Brisbane Grammar School was the first to kindly reach out and detail his ensemble size, instrument preference and skill request. And thats how this piece came together!
The piece also draws inspiration from traditional drumming styles such as Samba and West African Djembe drumming. It features solos from Timbales, Congas, Bongos and Snare Drum parts and a ripper groove to get the ensemble and audience dancing!
Parts can be doubled as desired and are scaled in terms of difficulty to allow for an ensemble of varied skill level.
The YouTube video is available for students to use as a play-along to practice.
