The piece is lighthearted and the florid melodies show off the soloist to full advantage. The solo passages are lightly accompanied, but the interludes allow the rest of the band to shine. The piece was originally presented in an arrangement for solo tuba and concert band, and the title was chosen as a humorous antithesis of the character of the piece. "Ponderosa" means "ponderous" , but the work is light and flowing. Thusit ably lends itself to the repertory of the E flat clarinet. (In actual fact the piece was originally written as a brass band cornet solo many years ago without any title at that time).
