Product Description

John Attey was a lutenist and composer of lute music, especially songs referred to as ayres, all of which qualify as English madrigals. The actual dates of his birth and death as well as other details about his life are mostly unknown. He was patronized by Lord John Egerton, 1st Earl of Bridgewater and the Countess Frances, to whom he dedicates his First Booke of Ayres in 1622. On the title-page of this work he calls himself a Gentleman and Practitioner of Musicke. Not only is this book of 14 aires John Atteys crowning achievement, it is also one of the last known published books of lute airs. It is believed he died sometime during the year 1640. This original lute music has been arranged for SATB recorders. This volume includes the following songs which are also available as individual separate titles. 01. On A Time the Amorous Silvy 02. The Gordion Knot 03. What Is All This World But Vain? 04. In A Grove of Trees 05. Shall I Tell You Whom I Love 06. My Dearest and Divinest Love 07. Bright Star of Beauty 08. Think Not Tis I Alone 09. Joy, My Muse 10. My Days, My Months 11. Madam, For You I Little Grieve 12. Resound My Voice 13. Vain Hope Adieu 14. Sweet Was the Song
