'Klee's Sketchbook' is based on the work of the Swiss-born artist Paul Klee. The piece is graphically notated throughout, referring explicitly to Klee's various notions of taking a 'line on a walk'. In this work, lines are presented in a variety of labelled forms and combinations, including the active, static (passive), angular and shadowing. The score indicates the basic outline of instrumental contours on staves, thus always implying certain pitches. However, many elements, such as dynamics and durations (and exact pitches), are left for the performer to determine. The work remains accessible for the listener and is appropriate for most standards of string player, including students and professionals. This document is the full score, and also serves as the full playing score for performers.
