Opus 24 was written when Mendelssohn was a young lad of 15. As it is one of the few original works for band there is a wealth of scholarly study available. Study alone does not make a piece survive the test of time. This piece survives because it is a delight to perform and an enjoyable listening experience. This quintet arrangement is chamber music in a classic style. The slow opening gives way to a joyful romp in which one can feel the confidence and pride a young musician (of any age) would feel after accomplishing fast sixteenth note articulations and rapid arpeggios. Add a bit of classical syncopation and this piece pleases performers and audiences alike.
