Product Description
The 2002 musical
and 2007 film Hairspray tells the
story of Tracy Turnblad, a dance-loving teenager, who auditions for a spot on The Corny Collins Show. Set in 1960s
Baltimore, Tracy finally wins a role on the show, becoming a celebrity
overnight, meets a host of new people, all leading to social change as she campaigns
for the show's integration.
The final number
from Hairspray, "You Can't Stop
the Beat" is sung by all of the main character (Tracy Turnblad, Link
Larkin, Penny Pingleton, Seaweed Stubbs, Edna Turnblad, Motormouth Maybelle,
Velma Von Tussle and Amber Von Tussle with Corny Collins and Wilbur Turnblad as
backing singers). Paying tribute to the 1966 Ike and Tina Turner hit
"River Deep Mountain High", the song covers a range of themes
concerning change and progression, notably sizeism and racism.
The film version
stars Nikki Blonski, Amanda Bynes, Zak Efron, John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer,
Queen Latifah and Christopher Walken.
In 2003 it won
eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The London production was nominated
for a record eleven Laurence Olivier Awards, winning four of them (including
Best New Musical). The cover from the 2016 live version of the musical was
nominated for "Best Musical Moment" at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV
awards.
