Product Description

Minimum instrumentation: 8 double reeds (or multiples) arranged in 2 antiphonal choirs. 4 oboes, 2 English horns, 1 bassoon, 1 contrabassoon (or 2 bassoons).

Giovanni Gabrieli's Canzon Ch. 172, also known as "Canzon septimi toni a 8," is a significant piece from his "Sacrae symphoniae" collection published in 1597. This composition is part of a larger body of work that was influential in developing the Venetian polychoral style. The publication of his music outside of Venice and the direct propagation of his musical language contributed to the spread of Gabrieli's style across the European continent at the beginning of the 17th century. The Canzon Ch. 172 is scored for two brass choirs. It is a testament to Gabrieli's innovative use of multiple choirs and spatially separated performers, a defining feature of the Venetian School.
