Product Description

Secrets of Ferns is a song-cycle of five pieces for mezzo-soprano and piano. The pieces depict the beauty, passion, love and suffering of human life and its relation to nature. The tonal inferences are abstracted in a way to compel thoughtful reflection of our natural world while leading us toward inner contemplation of the suffering and beauty of our personal lives.

The title piece, Secrets of Ferns is a unique "character piece" with a mysterious, slightly humorous overtone in its title. I was inspired by the poem through its imagery and fantasy. Composed by Anya Silver the poem was based on a painting by Anselm Kiefer. I spoke briefly with Anya and she was very pleased that her poem was the inspiration of my music and that an artistic circle of painting, poetry, and music was to be complete. Her unfortunate and sudden passing occurred one week prior to the recording of this music. At age 49, she had suffered from a long bout with cancer.
