Originally conceived as a harmonic exercise for piano, this piece was adapted for string quartet, in order to exploit their sustaining qualities and rich timbre. The piece explores inversions and 're-voicings' of the opening 8-chord sequence. Tones are sustained for as long as the players wish, who also determine their own dynamics, before moving on to the next chord. The effect is hypnotic, as a sense of (musical) time seems to be suspended. Sequence IV is accessible for the listener and is appropriate for most standards of string player. This document is the full score, and also serves as the full playing score for performers.
