Laurie’s journey through the world of music has been nothing short of a vibrant tapestry of experiences, woven with threads of passion, dedication, and an insatiable curiosity for new sounds. From her roots in Lancaster, PA, she has cultivated a rich musical life, embracing the cello not just as an instrument, but as a vessel for exploration and expression.
With an impressive resume that spans multiple genres, Laurie has seamlessly navigated the realms of classical, jazz, folk, and improvisatory music. It’s a unique blend that speaks to her versatility and deep commitment to the craft. Her 180-year-old German cello, a testament to history and artistry, resonates with every note she plays, while her NS Design 5-string electric cello offers her the freedom to explore the boundaries of sound in jazz settings.
Laurie's work as a Certified Healthcare Musician reflects her belief in music’s healing power. Engaging with room-bound residents and hospice patients, she brings comfort and joy to those in need, creating a shared space of warmth and musicality that transcends words. Her performances at retirement centers and for hospice patients are not just concerts; they are heartfelt connections that remind everyone of the universal language of music.
Her collaborative spirit shines through in her involvement with groups like Abigail's Garden and TRP (The Reese Project), where she contributes her talents to create music that stirs the soul. Each ensemble allows her to explore different facets of her musical identity — from the melodic storytelling found in folk music to the improvisational freedom of jazz. Laurie’s adaptability has also led her to perform with renowned artists and bands, sharing stages with the likes of Melissa Manchester and the Miami Sound Machine, and enriching the cultural fabric of the diverse locations she has performed in from the East Coast to Europe.
Laurie’s educational philosophy champions the inquisitive nature of adult learners, recognizing that understanding the ‘why’ behind techniques enriches the learning experience. Her approach encourages students to explore their musical interests, guiding them through the intricacies of classical repertoire, as well as the spontaneity of improvisation. This student-centered method not only fosters skill development but also ignites a lifelong love for music.
The legacy of her teaching extends beyond individuals; during her tenure at institutions like the Lancaster Conservatory of Music and various colleges, she inspired countless students with her passion for music and improvisation. Her workshops, particularly at Strings Excell, have empowered young string players to embrace creativity and spontaneity, nurturing a new generation of musicians unafraid to take risks.
Laurie’s journey began at the tender age of sixteen, when a last-minute gig for a folk singer introduced her to the world of professional music. That moment not only ignited her passion but also set her on a course that would lead to over 30 recordings, collaborations with extraordinary musicians, and performances in the most picturesque venues, from the serene landscapes of Maui to the bustling streets of New York.
Together with her husband, Tom Reese, Laurie has produced an impressive catalog of over 20 CDs and DVDs, marrying their original compositions to the magic of silent films. Their partnership, both in life and music, embodies a shared vision of creativity and innovation that inspires those around them. Though Tom passed away in August of 2024, their musical legacy lives on.
Through every note played, every lesson taught, and every performance shared, Laurie continues to create a world where music knows no bounds, inviting others to join her on this remarkable journey of sound and discovery.
