Product Description

In this Level 3.0 (Intermediate) String Orchestra arrangement, Martin Lass has arranged the final movement of Haydn's String Quartet Op. 33, No. 2, nicknamed "The Joke," for intermediate student string orchestra.

Haydn was renowned for having a wicked sense of humour. One recurring joke was trying to get audience members to clap prematurely at what they thought was the end of a piece. The finale of this string quartet is a classic example. As we approach the end of the movement, there are a number of unexpected stops and starts, some of them false endings, and even when the actual end is reached, it doesn't sound like the end!

In this arrangement from string quartet to string orchestra, a dedicated double bass part has been added, although this essentially doubles the cellos an octave lower. The original key of Eb major has been changed to D major to accommodate intermediate level students. The original dynamics and articulations have been edited and expanded to assist with interpretation.

Players should attend well to the articulations, dynamics, and other markings in order to give this piece the playful, spirited feeling that it is meant to convey, remembering that contrasts are everything. Note that all dotted notes are intended as spiccato, and such passages that include spiccato should be played in the lower half of the bow.

Duration: 3m 40s (with all repeats)
