A solo flute companion piece to my piano work "Rainfall," "Snowfall" delicately presents a similar theme but with a lighter twist. Just like its cousin composition, "Snowfall" takes the basic chords I and IV (in this case, F and B flat) and builds on them, adding to them clever embellishments and flashy flare to flesh out a heart-stirring, ear-catching, enjoyable tune. Hitting at both the upper register and lower register of the flute, the work gives constant place to imagery as staccato notes, skips, runs, fast passages and slower portions portray the progression of a fluttering snowfall. See if you can imagine the temperature cooling gradually, the light dusting of snow beginning to fall, the sudden sweep-over of a snowstorm more severe, and the eventual deceleration of it all. Despite its frigid and frosty setting, "Snowfall" is a heart-warming and indelible show-piece that would make a beautiful cap to any winter concert.
