I make piano solo arrangements for my students of songs that they love! My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music, but most importantly, that it actually makes pianistic sense. Sometimes I even hide exercises in the arrangements that I want a student to work on. All of my arrangements are usually made for a specific student, so the results will always vary.

This arrangement was made for an early intermediate student in level 3 of the Alfred's Masterwork Classics series. He loves this song and as we were playing through an arrangement from Piano Adventures Christmas level 3A, he said it was too boring and he wished it was more like the rock version on the radio. I said, "Challenge accepted! Now, let me see you play a C major scale in octaves with your LH." He could barely reach, but he managed. He'll be even better at it in a few weeks. When I played this for him, he started dancing around the room--very excited. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets it done in a week or two.

I give fingering and pedal suggestions. Hands tend to move quite a bit, but essential, so I kept nearly identical notes in the second half of the song (until the coda) with different dynamics and pedal markings to build intensity.

The song definitely stands on its own and an improvement over the boring method books, but definitely for a student who wants to be challenged and can play LH octaves.
