This song cycle sets the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe to music. Scored for mezzo-soprano and piano, it could also be performed with tenor or baritone voice. Appropriate for recital, this 16 minute work can be performed as a whole or pick your favorite single. This would be an excellent way to familiarize a student with the poetry of Poe. "Hymn" is appropriate for a Catholic or Episcopal service. A choral arrangement of "Hymn" is available, suitable for school or church choir. In this collection of poems from the 1800's, we follow the sleeper from twilight and the beginnings of sleep through a series of dreams. As the night draws to a close, the sleeper prays to Mary for the protection of the Lord in times of trouble. In the morning, the sleeper compares his life to a dream. The most famous line in this collection: "Is all that we see or seem, but a dream within a dream," comes to new life in this melodic setting.
