Burt Bacharach's famous tune (nominated for Best Song at the 1968 Academy Awards), which has been performed by the likes of Dusty Springfield, Diana Krall and Stan Getz, is arranged here in an easygoing bossa nova style for any four bass clef instruments, e.g.:
3 trombones, bass trombone
3 cellos, double bass (or 4 cellos)
3 bassoons, contrabassoon
3 trombones, tuba
2 trombones, euphonium, tuba
Mixed ensembles
The melody is in the 1st part throughout, which covers a range of D3-G4.
The 2nd part is in the range Bb2-C4, briefly extending to F4 (which can be omitted if necessary as it is in unison with the 1st part).
The 3rd part is mainly in the range Bb2-A3, briefly extending down to F2.
The 4th part requires a minimum range of C2-D3 (playable by a cello), with optional extensions down to F2 for bass instruments.
This arrangement is approximately 3 minutes long at a moderate tempo. Chords have been provided in the score for the option for an additional player to accompany on guitar or piano for an even more authentic bossa feel!
This arrangement is technically fairly straightforward, although it will challenge your ensemble to play with excellent tuning as it includes the richness of Brazilian jazz harmony, and with a strong sense of pulse due to the use of bossa nova syncopations. Your lead player should be able to make a confident, smooth sound for the melody to sing over the accompaniment parts.
