S.O.S. was written in 2012 as a saxophone solo for a dear saxophonist friend of mine, Rob Kinninmont, when he was going through a particularly difficult period in his life. A few years later I revisited the piece and created editions for flute and for oboe.

A morse-code rhythm: the S.O.S distress call ( . . . - - - . . . ) and the hollow-sounding intervals of the perfect fourth and the perfect fifth form central themes early in the piece, which is about the struggle through life's chaos.
