A truly beautiful and accessible arrangement of the familiar American folk tune, the haunting and strikingly simple melody is presented in a straightforward and sensitive manner. The lovely unison line separates seamlessly and smoothly into two- and three-part textures, all remaining in comfortable vocal ranges. Each part is highly melodic in character - none of them are static! The piano accompaniment is easy to play, supportive of the vocal parts, but also independent of them. The final phrase of each verse is expressed in beautiful, simple, and unaccompanied vocal counterpoint. The song ends with a drawn out extension of the final cadence, supported by the piano, which provides the final, poignant moment of closure for the piece.
