He was the leading Italian composer and organist in Venice at its greatest heights at the chasm between the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque period in music. Presented here is a Canzona published around 1615 for 22 brass divided into 5 choirs. A variety of substitute parts are also included to handle the trombone and trumpet parts with French horns and tuba. One of Gabrielis larger works, this piece starts by showing off each choir individually and then combining them as the work leads to its final conclusion. A great piece for larger brass ensembles, full of antiphonal effects and its unusual setting for 5 choirs.
