If you need something special for your beginners to play at their first Christmas concert, you've found it. JOY TO THE KING provides an easy and fun medley of the two popular tunes "Ode to Joy" and "Good King Wenceslas." The entire piece uses only the first five notes of the B-flat concert scale.

This is a great first concert piece the band will love to play. And since your school will be licensed to make legal photocopies of the parts year after year, you can let the kids keep their parts as a souvenir of their first performance!

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Very Easy (actually "Super Easy")

PROGRAMMING: first performance; Winter Holiday concert; Christmas concert

FEATURES: melody distributed through all wind parts; key of B-flat major; simple percussion parts using only quarter-, half-, dotted-half, and whole notes; there are 2 one-measure occurrences of sixteenth-notes in Snare and Tenor Drum part.

CHALLENGES: independence of the two lines (melody played over a simple bass accompaniment).

RANGES: uses only the first five notes of the B-flat Concert scale; clarinets must also play low G.

INSTRUMENTATION: includes Full Conductor Score (8 pages) and Parts (17 pages) for each instrument: Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Trumpet, Horn (in F), Trombone/Euphonium, T.C. Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion 1 (Snare & Bass Drum), Percussion 2 (Crash Cymbals, Triangle, Finger Cymbals), Bells/Mallets (2 different parts included for range desired/learned by player).

MINIMUM INSTRUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS: (A) Flute or Trumpet; (B) two Clarinets; (C) Bass Line (at least one: Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, any Saxophone, Horn, Trombone, Baritone, or Tuba); (D) Percussion.

NOTE: this Digital Download document is assembled with the Clarinet part appearing as page 1 so you may view it on the web site as you listen to the sound file. When you download/print the full document (25 pages, total), the first page to print will be the Clarinet part, followed by the FULL SCORE, then the remaining PARTS. (BcP-YB)
