The title "Strange Threes" refers to the unusual combination of flute, clarinet, and French horn, as well as the unusual rhythm patterns used throughout the piece, which are made of groups of three notes. Written for intermediate high school players, the trio is a quick, catchy piece that will serve as an exciting challenge for your students. Each instrument gets a chance to take the lead, but the key to the piece is ensemble precision, both in quick unison passages and where the parts combine to create a rhythmic "groove."
