The musical expression of this musical tableau (duration ca. 11 min.) mainly refers to the 3rd verse of the chorale text "Trotz dem alten Drachen" (I defy the old dragon) illustrating the fight with the dragon in a toccata style in the center of the piece. The opening passages have the chorale melody c. f. in the tenor and slowly build up an agitated mood. In a calm middle section in a Siciliano metre the chorale occurs in the major variant. The corresponding chorale text passage of the 3rd verse is "Ich steh hier und singe in gar sichrer Ruh" (I stand here and sing in secure peace). After the dramatic climax a calm variation closes the tableau.

In the youtube video (with additional percussion) a choir opens the work by singing the 1st verse of the Choral, the 2nd verse after the first section and the 3rd after the dramatic section instead of the final passage of the work.
