Product Description

This is a short - approximately 12 minutes - 'mini' opera. The only set requirements are two small tables with two chairs and two cups at each one, and a newspaper with a crossword puzzle for the Older Man. Four singers - one soprano (the older woman), one mezzo-soprano (the younger woman), a tenor (the younger man) and a baritone (the older man). Accompaniment is piano and flute. The flutist doubles as a waitress, but has no singing parts. The plot revolves around the older couple and younger couple over-hearing each other's conversations. There are times when it is just plain silly - there are a lot of laughs in this piece - but it does have serious, poignant undertones. The music style changes a bit depending on the mood of each song as the plot develops. Regardless of the style of each one, the music is generally tonal - nothing far out. When all four singers unite for the finale, they sing a quartet together which has a definite ragtime style, making the ending very upbeat. This is a good crowd-pleaser. It was written for and first performed by the Boulder (Colorado) Songmakers in 1997. The composer and lyricist are a mother-daughter team.
