The
Millers Waltz
Dan
Jones
At the
time of composing, I was living in Perthshire, Scotland. Near to our family
home is an abandoned water mill called Dron Mill. All that remains today is the
shell of a building, spaces where wheels and axles once stood, and a babbling
burn which has been reclaimed by nature.
In
centuries past, this would have been a place of activity and prosperity. I
imagined a miller living in this idyllic corner, concealed by the hillside.
Maybe he and his wife danced in the garden.
The
Millers Waltz reflects the indescribable magic which some places possess. A
poet in the 19th century also felt this magic when he/she wrote
anonymously:
"At
the fit o Balmanno, a whin-covered hill,
Nestlin
mang trees, there youll find the auld mill;
If wi
peace and contentment your mind you wad fill,
Gae up
to Dron Mill by the Ochils."
I hope
you enjoy playing The Millers Waltz.
