Evening is a unique pair of beautiful songs that are Sketches of evening situations. Both are very slow as one unwinds and relaxes at the end of day. Evening Prayer in the Convent is mostly homophonic invoking the Chorales and Hymns of the Convent and creates a soaring angelic sound. The harmony is close as the Sisters would sing together. Snowy Evening by the Fire uses richer tighter chords to create the warmth of the fire and the warm feelings gathered that day. Within the homophonic structure individual voices have movement to give narrative to the days reminisces.
Although the notes and rhythms are fairly easy, these pieces require careful attention to balance and the subtle differences when it is homophonic and when an individual voice is moving. Also accurate intonation is crucial due to the close chords and harmonies. The harmonies are tight with all 3 parts remaining within 1 octave. These pieces are excellent for developing group listening skills, but far from being etudes, each piece is a very expressive song.
Widely effective for personal expression, lessons, recital, or Lenten meditations.
