Product Description

This dramatic piece for Chamber Orchestra is excerpted and arranged from the Prison Scene in the Charles Gounod opera Faust (1859).
It is written and arranged to depict the horrors and sadness of ancient prisons. I slow the tempo down considerably to prolong the agony. The trumpets are instructed to play with a 'rough or dirty tone' at times. There is even a place in the score for a Screamer. In other words, this is perfect for your next Halloween Concert!
The piece opens with full crashing fortissimo chords and thundering timpani. Then the 'rough tone' section follows with reduced instrumentation. The final section slows even further and features a Clarinet Solo con dolore over softly pulsing strings. The piece concludes with an unaccompanied Clarinet cadenza.
Great for any concert that needs a unique and memorable piece.
Intermediate in difficulty due to Key Signature, wide range in some parts, and double stopping in strings.
Performance time: 4:00 minutes
13 page score, 1-2 page parts
