Product Description

The Bb Clarinet and Piano are equally featured in this concerto.
Time for each movement:  1st Movement (approx. 3 mins), 2nd Movement (approx. 6 mins), 3rd Movement (approx. 4:30 mins)

Movement I
The beginning of this movement provides much of the musical data for the rest of the piece.  Gentle and legato lines evolve into driving eighth note harmonies in the middle section.  Three times, there are significant pauses which may seem uncomfortable but, "waiting" (patience) can be a difficult process.  At the end of each time of silence and meditation, the performers work together to move forward in unity.

This movement ends with a retrograde (reverse order) of the first section in the piano part.  Listen for the delicate but consistent flow of eighth notes which begin and end this movement.

Movement II

The running sixteenth-note patterns in the piano contrast with the flowing, legato clarinet line at the beginning.  Midway, there is an echo of the beginning of the first movement with a slightly more vigorous accent of sixteenth notes in the piano part while the clarinet counters with a graceful melody. The movement ends with a quiet variation of the beginning of the first movement-using an irregular meter of five-four time.

Movement III

A cadenza-like solo for the clarinet opens this movement which again incorporates musical information from the first movement. The piano enters and both parts slowly develop a limited group of notes in Ab Dorian as they, seemingly, grow in expectation of the arrival of the climax of the piece, This part is also a variation of the apex of the first movement. The last section is a retrograde, in both parts, of the first 20 measures of the first movement, with slight variations.
