Product Description
An exciting and challenging concert band arrangement of the overture to one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular and enduring works. For "mature" bands, it emphasizes color and humor over accessibility to young players. Appropriate for college and university bands or wind ensembles, and for adult community bands. Also suitable for an advanced high school concert band or wind ensemble, perhaps at a school that produces musicals with a full student orchestra.
This arrangement has some special instrumental requirements, but cues provide alternatives for all of them:
- A confident solo oboist (the solo is cued for the 1st alto saxophone).
- An E-flat clarinet (cued for piccolo).
- A strong bassoonist. The 1st bassoon part uses tenor clef and goes up to a high B-flat (important bassoon passages are cued for saxophones; the 2nd bassoon part is easier and entirely in bass clef).
- Mallet Percussion part requires two players on vibes, xylophone, bells and marimba (the part is "prioritized" to allow performance with one player).
Duration: approx. 8:00 The audio clip is a complete concert performance by the Peninsula Symphonic Winds, a community band.
