Scored for two Violins, Viola and Violoncello, there is an alternative Violin part for Viola. There is also an optional Contrabass part so the piece can be performed by a String Quartet.
Part of Gossec's legacy is that he is regarded as the 'musical spokesman' for the French Revolution.  Tambourins martial character evokes the sound of 'Pipes and Drums' which traditionally led troops into battle, and 'Tambourin', of course, means 'little drum' in French.
