Product Description
In the year 594 BC, as the
city-state of Athens was spiraling into social and economic ruin, Solon was
elected Chief Magistrate. From this
position of power earned on the battlefield, Solon was able to institute reforms
and a new manner of governance. At a time when a high percentage of the people
were steeped in indentured servitude due to crushing debt owed to a small
percentage of aristocrats, his reforms were in no way popular, however they
paved the way towards modern day democracy.
Solon: Lawgiver of Athens depicts Athens during this time
as Solon comes to power. You will hear the great city-state of Athens, the
senate in turmoil, Solon shouting down the din, speaking calmly and with
measured reason, and eventually you will hear a move towards a major tonality
of the themes as Solons reforms take hold and social and economic stability is
once again established.
This piece was written to commemorate the opening of
the Solon Center for the Arts in 2017 and was first performed by Solon High
School Band in Solon, IA.
