This composition has two main sources. The first is the Easter hymn tune "Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag" (The Glorious Day Has Appeared) by Nikolaus Herman (1480?-1561), which begins on the flute in mm. 1-4. The second is the set of nontransitive dice known as Efron's Dice, invented by Bradley Efron (1938-). My musical representation of these dice first appears in the piano part in mm. 1-4. The four dice form a neat loop, as each die is beaten by the previous die with a probability of 2/3.
