According to popular belief, ghosts walk between zero and one o'clock at night - this is the witching hour. This is the darkest hour of the night, when day is particularly distant. In times when people got up at sunrise and went to bed at sunset, everything was usually fast asleep at midnight. It was pitch black and sepulchrally quiet - except for eerie sounds like wind, creaking wood or the rustling of animals. Thus the belief arose: while the day was the time of the living, the dead woke up at night.
