Paolo Quagliati, compositore veneto, visse fin dall'età di 20 anni a Roma. Per 30 anni fu maestro di cappella in S.Maria Maggiore, dove giacciono le sue spoglie.
La sua musica profana, tra cui questo madrigale, è tenuta in gran conto tra le origini del melodramma.

1) Quando miro il bel volto dove natura ha ogni suo ben raccolto
Dico dall'Indo alle Maure onde estreme: non vide il Sol tante bellezze insieme.
2) Quando odo le parole uniche al mondo gratiose e sole
Dico: se il sol dal sommo ciel le ascolta, o ferma il carro o cado un altra volta.
3) Quando miro il bel riso che addoppia la beltà nel suo bel viso
Ardisco dir che non è in questo mondo altro a veder più grato e più giocondo.
4) Ma se dal capo al piede miro quel bel che in ogni parte siede
Ardisco dir che in questa humana veste d'ogn'altra donna le bellezze havesti.

The text of the madrigal approximately goes like that:
1) When I look at that beautiful face, where Nature gathered all its good, I say out loud : the Sun has not seen so many beauties all together.
2) When I hear (from her) such pleasant words, unique in the world, I say: o Sun, you hear them from your carriage? Stop it, or I fall once again!
3) When I look at that smile which makes her beauty double, I dare to say: nowhere in this world will you find anything that pleasant and joyful.
4) But if I look at that beauty thoroughly from head to toe, I dare to say: these human appearance hides the beauty of every other woman.
