I Sing the Mighty Power of God
lyrics - Isaac Watts 1715
melody - ELLACOMBE adapted from
Gesangbuch der Herzog (Württemberg 1784) by William H. Monk 1868
Isaac Watts was an early hymn writer. Using hymns in the protestant church was controversial. The previous practice had been to sing the Psalms straight from the Bible, exclusively. In contrast to the Psalms, hymns expressed interpretation of the text and personal experiences. Like his poem Joy to the World the Lord is Come, I Sing the Mighty Power of God deserves to be sung and cherished.
