Psalm 3 is classed as a Psalm of Lament. The most basic pattern of the Psalm of Lament is the complaint followed by a statement of confidence. The Psalm of Lament progresses from the pain, doubt, and confusion caused by problems and suffering to a statement of belief that God knows and understands and will act for the good of the psalmist. This statement of confidence is not given after God has rescued, but while the psalmist is still in crisis. This is what makes the words a Psalm and not faithless murmurings that God condemns.
The opening words of the Psalm, A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son, (NASB) are actually the first verse of the Psalm 3 in the Hebrew Bible, not merely an editorial comment by a current scholar. The grief and pain that David felt in this time of his life (mixed in with the guilt of Davids adultery and murder which led to these events) were overpowering and crippling.
The movements of the tone poem Three Psalms are written using contemporary classical music composition techniques.
Davids complaint is set in the Phrygian Mode; Davids statement of confidence, the Mixolydian Mode.
