based on the public domain hymn by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1864) and John B Calkin (WALTHAM 1872.)
Longfellow, native of Maine, became Americas most famous poets. He is also known as an educator, a translator, and supported the abolition of slavery. His son, Charles, joined the Union army in 1863, without his fathers permission. In November of the same year Charles was seriously injured in the Battle of Mine Run. He authored Christmas Bells (the basis of this hymn) shortly afterward.
The chord structure of the bells sections is designed to produce partials that simulate the sounds of church bells.
