Product Description

This Sonata is the last of a set of ten Sonatas in 4 parts (2 violins, cello & basso continuo) dedicated to Lady Rhodia Cavendish and published in 1697, two years after Purcell's death by his widow. The 5 movements, Adagio, Canzona, Grave, Largo & Allegro are intended to be performed as one continuous piece. In arranging the Sonata for flute, oboe, clarinet in A and bassoon, changes of register have been necessary to suit the ranges and character of the wind instruments. All editings are shown in parentheses ( ) or [ ] with dashed lines for added slurs. Players of intermediate standard will find that the challenge of this sonata is more one of style and precision than technical difficulty. More advanced players will revel in the sheer inventiveness of the short lived Henry Purcell.
