Product Description

Supposedly, Tell Taylor wrote this song in 1908 while sitting by the Blanchard River in his native Ohio. Published two years later, "Down by the Old Mill Stream" turned out to be one of the eras most popular songs, reportedly selling four million copies. It has remained popular and, like others of its ilk, "Old Mill Stream" is still a favorite for sing-alongs, barbershop quartets, camp fire harmonizing and Valentines Day.
This version begins close-harmony-style with Trumpet 2 carrying the melody and Trumpet 1 harmonizing above the melody. Next comes the beautiful but rarely heard verse, followed by a more waltz-like version of the chorus with Trumpet 1 and Trombone playing lead. The key then changes from G to A-flat for a final upbeat rendition of the chorus. There is nothing particularly difficult in the score; the last time through is somewhat syncopated and Trumpet 1 plays its A above the staff for one brief 8th note.
This arrangement was completed in 2017, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 44 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. For more arrangements by Les (such as "By the Light of the Silvery Moon," "Daisy Bell," "I Wonder Whos Kissing Her Now," "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" and "Moonlight Bay"), enter "Sweetwater Brass Press" (without the quotation marks) in the search box. (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.)
