This arrangement of the traditional Christmas carol God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen, for student string orchestra, uses rich harmonies and invigorating rhythms to make your holiday concert exciting! With exceedingly playable and energetic parts, this piece is a favorite of students and audiences alike.
The parts have been arranged to both teach skills and help students sound their best. The piece includes violin and cello parts at multiple levels (Violin I, Violin II, Violin III, Cello I, Cello II) to allow you to use this with mixed-level groups. The level of this piece is "1b" or "Easy".
Level descriptions for each part:
Violin 1 is all in first position, with high and low 2nd finger, string crossing, and a few measures with sixteenth note rhythms.
Violin 2 is all in first position with high 2nd finger only, and with more repeated notes and finger numbers over the notes than the Violin 1 part has.
Violin 3 is very simple, all on the D and G strings, and uses only open strings, 1st, and 2nd finger, and lots of repeated notes. The part has simple rhythms that often mirror the rhythms in the other violin parts so that Violin 3 students will be able to stay together with the group. (Violin 3part is optional.)
Viola is all in first position with high 2nd finger only, repeated notes and easy rhythms. (Viola part is optional.)
Cello 1 is all in first position, with notes on the A, D, and G strings. The cellos have the melody for one verse.
Cello 2 is all in first position, with notes only on the D and G strings, simple rhythms, and repeated notes. (Cello 2 part is only necessary if not using Piano.)
Double Bass is all in first position. (Double Bass part is optional.)
Piano accompaniment enriches the sound of the orchestra and helps with solidifying rhythms. (Piano part is optional but recommended, can be replaced by Cello 2.)
