It borrows a short melodic motive from "Yes, we have no bananas," a popular tune used throughout the ages as a protest song (protestant/catholic revolt ) against tyranny and during times of economic depression. It has become primarily known as a children's song in contemporary times. In the early 1920's it was the number one hit for five weeks according to Billboard magazine.
