Product Description

12.15.89 was commissioned by Henry Crapo for the American saxophone virtuoso John Sampen. The premiere was given on March 14, 1990, by the Hartt Contemporary Players conducted by Douglas Jackson with John Sampen as soloist.

The work is in two movements beginning with a lyrical slow movement featuring the saxophone accompanied by an "ensemble within the ensemble" as well as air-only sonic interventions by the winds and col legno battuto passages by the strings. A throbbing and persistent bass drum motif underlines the entire movement.

The virtuoso second movement features the saxophone with a tapestry of active strings along with occasional chordal punctuations by the winds, strings and percussion. The musical material comes mainly from the first movement and is transformed here as a virtuoso vehicle.

The duration is 16 minutes. The strings may be played by a string orchestra or a string quintet.
