The Three Preludes were a commission by the French Ministry of Culture as a contest piece as part of the requirements for the top teaching diploma in France. The trio was added several months later. There are several ways to perform this piece. The three preludes may be performed by a single oboist, three oboists may take turns playing the preludes and then together play the trio or the trio may be performed by itself. The duration is 5'10.

Three Preludes and Prelude Trio was premiered by 60 oboists during January and February 1996 as part of the exam for the French national teaching certificate (C.A.).
