Based on William Shakespeare's Sonnet VIII which deals with a young man who is saddened by his choice to lead a single life (represented by the cello) and is chastized by the women who surround him. This piece calls for a very fine cellist who can create through their playing the melancholy experienced by this man. While substantially dissonant, the vocal parts should be readily accessible to any good women's choir.
