The horrors of gas warfare are brought to life with rhythmic intensity and passion. The title "Dulce et Decorum Est" is "the old lie" according to Owen: "It is sweet and right to die for your country." The piece ends with a comforting chorale-like setting of the composer's words: "Light eternal shines all around them, resting forever, finally at rest."
