Product Description
from the liner notes to Paul Ayres's CD Rainbow Toccata:
"A favourite trick of organists, when reharmonising last
verses of hymns, is to introduce a chromatic bass line. Accompanying the
opening melody of Michelle with a
chromatic descending scale seems to be almost too obvious (its not quite how
the Beatles harmonise the tune). I wondered how far it might be possible to
continue in this same vein, in strict four-part counterpoint. The result is a
rich, intense harmonic sound-world reminiscent of Franck, Fauré and Vierne. As
Michelle herself, in the song, is French (we assume: but perhaps shes from Luton
and her paramour is speaking in French merely in order to well, as a pop hit fourteen
years later would say, "voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?"), this nod in
the direction of les grandes orgues de Paris seems suitable, and registration
has been chosen accordingly."
